Daring to Dream?

Wow. What a weekend of General Election.

Surprised, surprise! I got my wish: BN winning the election but without the 2/3 majority, thats exactly what i hopped for. It was a happy day for me!

However, the thing i found most refreshing is that instead of complaining in our own sitting room, the people of Malaysia have voiced out their concerns and hopes in the recent GE. The results matters, but most of all is the democracy that we have so long thought dead has spoken again. I salute thee, Malaysians.

Having such results would now entice us to start dreaming again. Dreaming for a better Malaysia, for a stronger nation and border less unity between the races in Malaysia. We need a stronger economy, a transparent system of governance to show Malaysians that the government mean business and there's no hanky panky dealings behind the curtains and under the tables. I am a believer that challenges bring out the best in us all, rather than rest on our laurels and wait for the gold to be falling from the sky. The great loss for BN could only mean that now everyone in UMNO, MCA and MIC would work hard to regain the people's trust, and the great victory for the previously so-called Opposition would also work their asses off to show that the people have made the right choice and they are here to stay. We, the people would and could only benefit from such rivalry, just like our favourite telecomms networks, Maxis, Celcom and Digi going out of their way to please the consumers.

People should not be afraid of their government, but the government should be afraid of their people. The mandate was given by the people, and thus be honored by the government of the day. Our past governments have the luxury of being over-confident, arrogant in the face of overwhelming support over the last 50 years of independence. This lesson could possibly make the BN a better and stronger government than its predecessors. Only if the lesson is learnt, that is.

Nonetheless, the day is still too young to feel triumphed or defeated by just the counts of votes upon the scoreboard. Would the alternative government fail in their promises and pledges? Would the people see a backlash of fortunes given this turn of events? No one could ever expect the real outcome of the GE, until the next GE comes along and we again have choices to be made.
Until then, all we can do is dare to dream.
